Historically Ahmedabad has been known for its flourishing textile industry, so it was but natural for a museum of textiles to be in the city. In year 1949, industrialist Guatam Sarabhai and his sister Gira Sarabhai along with the famous house of textile company Calico, founded the Calico Museum of Textiles to display the textiles spun, woven, printed or painted in India in the last five centuries. These historic textiles are displayed in two galleries: one is called Religious section and the other is Historical. Apart from them, there are embroidery, sculptures, paintings and various types of textile technique on display. This world famous finesh textile museum attracts thousands of visitors each year. It is open from 10AM to 12:30 PM; 2:45 PM to 4:45 PM and is closed on Wednesday and Public holidays.
Located inside the Sabarmati Ashram, on the banks of river Sabarmati, this museum is dedicated to the Father of the Nation, MK Gandhi. The ashram built in 1915 was home to Gandhiji for more than 15 years and from here the struggle for Independence was carried till 1930. The museum was designed by the famous architect Charles Correa, built in 1963 and inaugarated by the then prime minister Jawarharlal Nehru. The museum displays writings, photographs, artefacts, books and many other items related to Gandhiji and his life, all of which beautifully speaks about the life of the great inspiring man that was MK Gandhi.
The Kite Museum was founded in 1985 by a passionate kite lover Mr. Bhanu Shah, the founder-director of the museum till recently. Mr. Shah collected many different types of kites over the years, which he thought should belong to a museum. The museum showcases the history of kite, the culture of kite flying in various parts of the world as well as the inspiration science took from kite flying. The museum is now housed in the Sankar Kendra, Ahmedabad and run by Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC). The Museum is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m, closed on Mondays.
This is a national museum dedicated to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. It was set up in 1978 in the Moti Shahi Mahal in the Shahibaug area of Ahmedabad. The museum display various artefacts, books and portrait related to Sardar Patel, his friends, family and associates. There is also the famous Indian flag designed by Indian National Congress in 1930-31. It is open from 9:30 AM to 5:00 pm and is closed on Monday and Public Holidays.
A museum dedicated to the folk art and craft of people of different communities and regions of Gujarat. One can find exhibits of beautiful craftwork like tie and dye, block printing, wood carving, metal carving, bead work, silver ornaments, leather work, brass ware, pottery and various embroidery and weaving. This is an ideal place to get introduced to the art and craft work of Gujarat. The museum is open from 10 AM to 1:30 PM; 2 PM to 5:30 PM. It is closed on mondays and public holidays.
